Spring is here! It comes with thoughts of flowers, dresses, rainy afternoons, birds chirping and the world singing, right? Though it is not all sunshine and roses, I think it also comes with those two dreaded words "spring cleaning". I don't know about you but, I dislike the act of cleaning so very much. I whine, I avoid and I flat out say "no" sometimes. But, no one can deny the fabulous feeling the comes with organization and cleanliness (though, I tried to convince my mom otherwise many times).
We have all cleaned out a garage, a junk drawer, a closet, but when was the last time you cleaned yourself out? Yes, I am talking about a detox! That does not mean only drinking liquids or starving yourself... I don't know how healthy that is, though I do have to say I am not a nutritionist.
I did a detox that had different phases and lasts a month. Yes, I complained and acted like a baby at times, but no, it was not as hard as I thought it would be. And no, I will not lie and say that only eating vegetables made me feel like the world was all sunshine and I have decided all other food is evil. I think, that like most things in life, the key is moderation. Doing this detox has helped me to curb cravings, control my portions and really appreciate those sugary treats that should be treats, not a staple.
Here is the outline of what I did. I think it was a balanced way to clean out your body system without going overboard.
Cleanse & Purge
- Corn Tortillas with egg or tofu and veggies. Something like this
- This Miso Noodle Bowl (with brown rice noodles instead of soba).
- This Lentil Dal .
- Brown rice with vegetable stir fry.
- Baked sweet potato fries.
The worst thing I tried on this week was to make coconut flower pancakes for National Pancake Day. I couldn't finish them, one of the nastiest things I have ever made. I am sure it would have been much better with some sugar or even some gluten. Or maybe I just needed another recipe, but if yours has banana, vanilla, coconut flour, eggs, and coconut milk alone... RUN!
- Chipotle: Sofritas bowl with brown rice, beans, veggies, pico de gallo, lettuce and guacamole. (I almost cried happy tears when I ate this)
- Flame Broiler: Brown rice & veggie only bowl. (Pretty plain and bland, but much better than nothing.
Add Meat & Caffeine
- Lettuce wrapped double hamburger with mustard . (No sauce, cheese, or bun)
- Meat and vegetable bowls
- Ask for gluten free menus- Often breakfast menus have more options, aka: eggs & bacon with potatoes.
Sugar in Moderation
A benefit I was not expecting was losing 13 pounds on the detox (while walking 45 minutes a night) and I have only gained back 1 pound in the two weeks I have been back to eating normal. I am glad I did it and trust me, I am not the one to recommend diets and useless routines. I am very skeptical about all this usually, but this is something worth doing for your health.
Again, I am not a nutritionist, maybe you should meet with one to set-up a personal plan for you. but either way make sure you are ready to commit to the month ( I started mine after Valentines Day because I knew the treats would tempt me away). I really do hope you think about it, I am glad I did.
